The Hangeul and Computer Foundation held the “Multicultural Harmony Camp: Joy of Being Together” from Oct. 4 to 5 at Cheongrium in Gapyeong, Gyeonggi Province, with about 500 participants.

The camp, held for the second time following an event in the first half of this year, expanded support activities for multicultural families that Kim Sang-cheol (김상철), chairman of the Hancum Group, has continued for five years into a foundation-level programme. Multicultural families in the Seoul metropolitan area from 12 countries including China, Vietnam and the Philippines took part, along with volunteers from International Rotary District 3640 and Woomoonji.

At the opening ceremony on the first day, the Hangeul and Computer Foundation, International Rotary District 3640 and Woomoonji jointly awarded a total of 30 million won in scholarships to 30 youths from multicultural families. Woomoonji also signed memorandums of understanding with the Gapyeong County Family Center and the Guri City Family Center, respectively.

The event also featured a calligraphy experience using Hangeul as a theme and a poetry-and-painting exhibition. A foundation official said, “Going forward, the foundation will take on a role that connects people and cultures through Hangeul,” and added, “We will continue to support future generations, including multicultural youths, so they can grow into confident leaders in our society, and further publicise the excellence and value of Hangeul widely around the world.”
