Casio may be preparing a successor model to its ring-shaped digital watch, a report said.

Tech outlet TechRadar reported on Wednesday that the new product is known as the CRW-002 and is being developed based on the design of Casio’s metal A168 digital watch series.

The model is being mentioned as a product following the CRW-001, which was released in December 2024. The existing product drew attention for its unusual look, shrinking a digital watch into a ring form. It sold out quickly every time it was restocked after launch.

The CRW-002, which has been described as a successor, is likely to strengthen its link to Casio’s flagship models from its exterior design. It is expected to reflect the A168’s distinctive metal design and could come in two colours: steel and gold. It was also reported that markings on the body would include phrases similar to the original model, such as "Stopwatch" (Chronograph), "Backlight" (Illuminator) and "Water Resist".

The ring band also appears to be designed as a scaled-down version of a watch strap. Based on released images, the band uses a moulded structure that mimics a strap form. Functions were mentioned as including dual time, a 60-minute stopwatch, an LED backlight, a calendar, a 12-hour and 24-hour display, and "time flash", in which a light blinks on the hour or at a user-set time.

The price was cited at around $135, or about 180,000 won. That is similar to the average trading price of the existing CRW-001. The launch timing was estimated as November. Casio has not made an official announcement, so the actual product name, specifications and release schedule could differ.

The successor speculation also coincides with demand for retro-style digital devices. Casio’s retro digital watches have maintained steady demand, and that trend is continuing in wearables.

Casio’s other wearable products are also drawing similar reactions. The Bluetooth-enabled digital watch F-B100W won a strong response in Japan by highlighting app-linked step tracking and a phone-finder function. After selling out at some retailers in Britain, it was recently launched in the U.S. market. TechRadar rated the product as "an outstanding watch for the price and the most fun smart wearable I've worn this year".

Against that backdrop, the possibility is growing that Casio will expand its watch ring lineup. Although the CRW-001 is a niche device, it repeatedly sold out. Attention is on whether Casio will seek to confirm demand again with a successor of a similar concept.
