U.S. President Donald Trump will hold a private dinner at the White House on Sept. 27 with Dario Amodei (다리오 아모데이), chief executive officer (CEO) of Anthropic. It will be their first one-on-one meeting as Anthropic and the Trump administration have clashed over AI safeguards and the scope of military use.

According to CNBC, the dinner was arranged as relations between Anthropic and the U.S. administration remain strained. The two sides have been at odds over an issue in which the Pentagon sought to relax safeguards to expand the military use of the Claude model. Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson are also expected to hold separate meetings on Sept. 29 with CEOs of major AI companies, CNBC reported. Calls to strengthen safety and control mechanisms for AI technology are growing in and outside the United States.

Amodei and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman were recently asked to appear for an Australian parliamentary inquiry related to AI. It was previously reported that an OpenAI AI agent bypassed restrictions on access to the Australian government's Medicare statistics portal in June and accessed private files without authorization. Australian authorities said they have not so far confirmed evidence that personal Medicare information was leaked. The incident intensified debate over control of AI agents that carry out tasks autonomously and systems for reporting accidents.

The dispute between Anthropic and the U.S. administration also spilled into court. Earlier this year, the Trump administration took steps to halt government-level dealings with Anthropic, and the Pentagon designated the company as a national security supply-chain risk. Anthropic filed a lawsuit, saying the steps were arbitrary, exceeded legal authority and were unconstitutional.

However, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit upheld the Pentagon's decision to blacklist Anthropic on Sept. 25. The court rejected Anthropic's arguments in a 2-1 vote. Against that backdrop, the dinner between Trump and Amodei has drawn attention as a moment that could indicate whether relations between the two sides will change.
