Livall’s PikaBoost electric bicycle conversion kit has returned in a new model that is even lighter.

On Jan. 12, electric vehicle outlet Electrek introduced the newly unveiled PikaBoost 2 Lite as a product redesigned in a more minimalist form from the existing friction-drive e-bike conversion kit. First revealed last week, the product is drawing attention as an entry-level e-bike solution by highlighting simple installation and portability.

A friction-drive system delivers rotational force by pressing a roller against the bike’s rear wheel, removing the need to install a wheel hub motor or mid-drive motor like a typical e-bike. It has limitations in efficiency and durability compared with a complete e-bike, and also has drawbacks such as increased tire wear and difficulty using a rear fender. Even so, it is viewed as a practical alternative because installation is fast and the structure is simple.

The biggest feature of the PikaBoost 2 Lite is its weight. With a small 158Wh battery, it weighs about 6.6 pounds, or about 3 kg. The battery capacity also meets the 160Wh limit that many U.S. airlines apply to carry-on lithium-ion batteries, allowing users to carry the product when flying.

Installation is also simple. It mounts on the bike’s seat tube and does not require a separate app or remote control. When the rider starts pedaling, the system detects it and provides up to about 250W of electric assist. The manufacturer said average riding effort is reduced by about half, hills feel less steep and flat roads can feel like riding downhill.

It does not replace all riding like a fully throttle-based e-bike, but it is considered sufficient as an assist tool that reduces the burden of everyday riding.

It also stresses price competitiveness. The PikaBoost 2 Lite sells for $329, or about 480,000 won, making it a relatively affordable option that can be mounted on an existing bicycle to convert it into an e-bike. It is presented as an alternative that can replace buying a low-priced, complete e-bike by making use of a bicycle left unused in a garage due to infrequent use.

Another advantage is easy attachment and removal. Riders can remove the kit to reduce weight for short trips or exercise rides, and attach it again in about 30 seconds for electric assist on long rides or on days when they feel less fit.

The PikaBoost 2 Lite currently ships worldwide. Friction-drive e-bike conversion kits are not the only option, but it is seeking differentiation with a simple design and portability.
