Korea Post, an affiliate of the Ministry of Science and ICT, issued 496,000 World Maritime Day commemorative stamps on Sept. 15.

World Maritime Day was designated in 1978 by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), a specialised agency under the United Nations, to commemorate the maritime industry's contribution to the global economy. It is observed each year on the last Thursday of September. It is intended to highlight the importance of maritime safety and marine environmental protection and the role of shipping in supporting international trade.

The commemorative stamp expresses South Korea's status in leading the global maritime order and international solidarity. It features the IMO symbol and the South Korean flag against the backdrop of Busan Port. Park In-hwan (박인환), head of Korea Post, visited the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries on the day to present the stamps and shared the meaning of World Maritime Day and cooperation plans for a sustainable maritime future.

South Korea has been selected as a co-host country for the 2026 World Maritime Day commemorative event. The event, co-hosted by the IMO and the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, will be held in Busan from Oct. 26 to 27. Korea Maritime Week will follow from Oct. 28 to 29.

Park said, "I hope these commemorative stamps will be remembered as a meaningful record of working together to create safe and sustainable seas."
