[DigitalToday reporter Jinju Hong] An analysis said an electric vehicle battery is not something that should be replaced immediately just because driving range has fallen slightly.

According to IT outlet Engadget on Sept. 12 local time, high-voltage traction batteries in EVs can gradually lose storage capacity over time, but that alone does not mean the battery has failed.

The key is the pattern of change rather than the range drop itself. Some performance decline is part of normal ageing, but a sudden and hard-to-explain change calls for inspection. Engadget noted, "It is more important to distinguish whether the visible change is normal ageing or a problem requiring professional diagnosis than whether the battery has worn a little."

Complete battery failures are difficult to view as common in recent EVs. An analysis by the U.S. Department of Energy of about 15,000 plug-in vehicles showed the battery failure replacement rate, excluding recalls, was 1.5 percent. For model years 2016 through 2023, the replacement rate was tallied at less than 1 percent for every year.

Battery life varies by use conditions. The U.S. Department of Energy recently estimated EV batteries can last 12 to 15 years in mild climates and 8 to 12 years in extreme climates. Battery chemistry, temperature, charging habits and driving patterns affect lifespan. A 2026 Geotab analysis of 21 models and more than 22,700 vehicles put the average annual battery degradation rate at 2.3 percent.

But the estimated range shown on the instrument cluster does not directly indicate battery health. Temperature, cabin heating and cooling, highway driving, acceleration, hills and payload weight all affect per-charge range. Cold weather alone can cause a temporary drop in range. If battery consumption repeatedly increases on the same commute route under similar weather conditions, it may then be possible to examine the likelihood of performance degradation more closely.

A sharper warning sign is an abrupt change. That includes a sudden drop in usable range, a newly imposed limit on maximum charge level, or reduced vehicle performance. If those changes appear along with a battery or high-voltage system warning, the priority rises. Tesla advises that if certain internal battery conditions are detected, maximum charge level and driving range may decrease, and recommends booking service if related warnings persist.

It is hard to conclude a battery needs replacement based on slower charging alone. Battery temperature, state of charge, charger output and model-specific charging curves can all affect charging time. A slowdown in charging speed becomes more meaningful when it appears with warning messages or other unexplained changes.

The next step needed in such situations is a battery condition check. Service centres qualified for EV maintenance can review diagnostic codes and battery data to determine whether it is typical degradation, a fault that can be repaired, or an issue requiring replacement of the entire battery pack. That means inspection comes first if a battery defect is reported or usable capacity has fallen enough to disrupt normal driving.

Battery warranty coverage should also be checked before judging costs. Some manufacturers offer separate long-term warranties for traction batteries, but mileage limits, warranty periods and capacity guarantee standards vary by model. If the entire battery pack must be replaced after the warranty ends, the cost burden can grow. A Recurrent survey presented many replacement costs at around $5,000 to $16,000. Actual costs can vary depending on battery pack size, vehicle design, labour and parts availability, and diagnostics may show the issue can be resolved with partial repairs rather than full replacement.

Battery replacement is also not a task ordinary users can do themselves. High-voltage battery packs require dedicated procedures, equipment and protective gear, so disassembly or removal should be left to skilled technicians.

Ultimately, if an EV is operating normally overall, there is no need to decide on battery replacement based solely on gradually declining range. If persistent warnings, sudden performance changes or a drop in current range to a level that cannot support actual usage patterns occurs, it is a reasonable sequence to get a battery pack inspection first.
