Visa is combining VisaNet payment data with blockchain-based loans to support working-capital funding for stablecoin-linked card operators. It is an attempt to expand on-chain lending, which has grown mainly in the crypto market, into real payment and settlement.

On Sept. 8, Cointelegraph reported that Visa unveiled a new financial structure that uses VisaNet settlement records together with on-chain transaction data. Lenders can assess creditworthiness based on a card operator's actual settlement performance and repayment history on the blockchain. They can also supply daily settlement funds that must be paid to the Visa network.

An early case is blockchain lending protocol Credit Coop. The company worked with Visa to build a revolving credit line denominated in stablecoins. It supplies funds backed by card receivables and uses smart contracts to automate loan execution and repayment. Since 2023, it has supported more than $2.5 billion of settlement volume with financing and handled more than 3,000 borrowings and more than 9,000 repayments. Visa said no defaults have occurred at participating facilities so far.

Visa's stablecoin business is also growing quickly. As of the second quarter of fiscal 2026, more than 160 stablecoin-linked card programs operated globally, and payment volume rose about 200 percent from a year earlier. Visa settlement using stablecoins also recently exceeded an annualised $20 billion, expanding more than 15-fold from a year earlier.

Visa explained that credit limits in the traditional financial sector can be a burden for early-stage fintech companies in terms of size and review time. By combining actual payment data with on-chain repayment records, smaller operators can raise as much funding as they need and settle 24 hours a day, including weekends.

Visa is expanding stablecoins beyond a simple payment method into financial infrastructure that links lending and settlement, widening the intersection between traditional payment networks and on-chain finance.
