Woori Bank becomes first domestic bank to secure government bond trade via global payment network
Woori Bank said on Wednesday it completed a transaction to directly trade and settle Korean government bonds with an overseas financial institution using an international central securities depository (ICSD). It said it was the first case by a domestic bank to conclude an actual trade with a foreign investor since offshore settlement via ICSD was allowed for local financial institutions in January. The deal also linked foreign exchange transactions and derivatives.

Brokerages cut domestic branches and step up global push
South Korean brokerages are accelerating overseas expansion as mobile trading prompts further streamlining of domestic branches. As of end-2025, 16 firms operated 93 overseas outlets, up by 13 from a year earlier, while overseas subsidiaries’ net profit rose 67.8 percent. Domestic branches at the top 10 brokerages slipped to 438 as of March 31. Firms are widening foreign omnibus account services and building networks across the United States, Hong Kong, Southeast Asia and India.

Mirae Asset Securities launches foreign investor omnibus account service with Singapore brokerage
Mirae Asset Securities will launch a foreign investor omnibus account service in partnership with Singapore-based brokerage UOB Kay Hian, it said on Sunday. The service allows overseas investors to trade South Korean shares through their local brokerage systems without opening separate accounts in South Korea. Mirae Asset said the deal was led by its Singapore unit and expects it to improve market access for investors in Singapore and Southeast Asia. It plans to expand cooperation with other overseas financial institutions.
