Ethereum, Solana and Avalanche flag major upgrades in second half of 2026
Protocol upgrades rather than prices are emerging as a key variable for the blockchain market in the second half of 2026. Cointelegraph reported that Ethereum, Solana and Avalanche are preparing major upgrades, while Coinbase’s Base recently implemented the Beryl hard fork. This year’s upgrade focus is shifting toward stability, predictable governance and institutional-grade infrastructure. Ethereum’s Glamsterdam, Solana’s Alpenglow and Base’s Beryl include changes aimed at scalability and finality, while Avalanche is prioritising restructuring tied to institutional demand and tokenised assets.

Ethereum \'Glamsterdam\' upgrade enters final stage as devnet testing begins
Ethereum developers have entered the final stages of work on the next major upgrade, dubbed “Glamsterdam,” and have begun devnet testing that includes the full set of Ethereum Improvement Proposals. Ethereum Foundation core developer Parithosh Jayanthi said the devnet work is the last step before testnet stabilisation and deployment, though an exact activation date has not been set. The upgrade is expected in the second half of this year.

Ethereum developers top 1 million, quantum resilience and L2 integration seen as next tasks
The cumulative number of contributing developers in the Ethereum ecosystem has exceeded 1 million, reaching 1,012,824, with about 232,000 active over the past 12 months. Joseph Chalom, CEO of Nasdaq-listed SharpLink Gaming, said no other blockchain ecosystem has reached that scale. He cited Electric Capital data and highlighted upcoming priorities including the 2026 hard fork “Glamsterdam”, cross-rollup synchronous composability and post-quantum security efforts targeting a transition around 2029.
