MSIT holds working-level body on data safe zones, discusses steps to boost use
South Korea\'s Ministry of Science and ICT held its 2026 working-level consultative body on data safe zones on May 11 to discuss measures to improve access and promote use of previously undisclosed data. The meeting brought together 16 organisations, including 11 operators and five institutions selected for new designation. The ministry plans to support selected institutions with up to 200 million won each. Agencies also presented cloud linkage and consulting plans.

First government-wide survey of AI training data holdings
South Korea will begin its first full inventory of artificial intelligence training data scattered across the public sector. The Ministry of Science and ICT and the National Information Society Agency will launch a cross-government survey from April 10 to map holdings by ministries and public agencies. The government plans to identify 100 high-use datasets and provide them through an integrated system, including data that could be used after processing. Some data will be provided via designated secure zones.

Science ministry launches call for 2026 data safe zone designations to expand use of closed data
South Korea\'s Ministry of Science and ICT, the National Information Society Agency and the Korea Data Agency said on Tuesday they will start accepting applications on March 3 for new 2026 designations of \'data safe zones\' that allow secure analysis and use of closed data. The programme includes general designations and conversion designations. Up to 5 institutions will be selected for conversion designations, with up to 200 million won each to build security environments.
