Profit divide for Orion and Lotte Wellfood hinges on chocolate dependence
Orion and Lotte Wellfood posted higher consolidated sales last year from a year earlier, but their operating profit results diverged, industry officials said. Orion’s operating profit rose 2.7 percent, while Lotte Wellfood’s fell 30.3 percent. Both cited higher raw material costs, particularly a surge in cocoa prices. Orion’s core products are snacks, biscuits and pies, while Lotte Wellfood relies more on chocolate products such as Ghana and Pepero.

Lotte Wellfood starts up new cocoa processing equipment at Yangsan plant
Lotte Wellfood said on Tuesday it has started operating newly installed cocoa bean processing equipment on the BTC line at its Yangsan plant in South Gyeongsang Province. The company invested about 15 billion won to improve process efficiency and raise output capacity. It said the number of process steps fell 25 percent and cocoa mass output rose to 2.5 tons per hour from 1 ton. The cocoa mass is used across its chocolate products.
