Postmen to check on residents and help with surveys as Korea Post expands public role

Korea Post is expanding the role of postmen to act as a “last mile” in national administration, including identifying welfare blind spots and carrying out administrative checks. It shifted from one-off disaster response to a permanent delivery system for welfare and administrative services after introducing “welfare mail” in 2022. Legal grounds were strengthened in May through an amendment. Projects also include statistical surveys and environmental collection efforts such as unused medicines and e-cigarettes.

Domestic postage fees to rise for first time in 5 years from July 1

South Korea will raise domestic standard postage fees for the first time in 5 years, starting on July 1, the Ministry of Science and ICT’s Korea Post said. The price of a standard letter up to 25 grams will rise to 500 won from 430 won, while other weight bands will also increase by 70 won. Korea Post cited falling mail volumes and rising operating costs amid widening losses.
