Google reuses DDR4 from retired servers for AI equipment amid memory shortage
Google is reusing older DDR4 memory recovered from decommissioned servers in newer AI equipment as a worsening supply crunch hits memory chips, driven by the spread of AI data centres. Google said it remains hard to secure enough chips and called faster capacity expansion by manufacturers the most sustainable solution. Neocloud market shifts as SoftBank and Meta enter
The neocloud market for AI-focused cloud computing is shifting as major players enter. SoftBank Group and its telecom unit SoftBank plan to start a neocloud business next fiscal year, renting AI computing resources to U.S. companies. Meta is also stepping up plans to use its data centres for cloud services. Nvidia is expanding support for smaller cloud firms that lease its GPUs. Meta develops \'Vistara\' chip technology to reuse memory from older servers
Meta has developed a technology called Vistara that removes DDR4 memory from older servers and installs it in new servers, using its own CXL chip to share memory between applications without latency problems, The Register reported. A Meta paper said about 40% of its servers, or millions of machines, cannot expand memory. Meta said the approach cut incidents of work stopping due to memory shortages by 33%.
