Ford reclassifies $30,000 electric pickup from midsize to small
Ford has changed the planned vehicle class of its electric pickup targeted for a 2027 launch, describing it as a small truck rather than a midsize model. The company is positioning the model as an affordable electric pickup built on its new Universal Electric Vehicle platform, with a starting price expected at about $30,000. Ford also plans to use LFP batteries and megacasting, simplify parts, and target at least 300 miles of range.

Ford has begun producing lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cells in the United States as it steps up efforts to target the mass-market electric vehicle segment. The company produced its first LFP cells at its BlueOval Battery Park in Michigan, with plans to use them in a mid-size electric pickup priced in the $30,000 range due in 2027. Ford licensed technology and manufacturing processes from China’s CATL and also plans to use the batteries in energy storage systems.

Ford CEO says Ford to launch affordable EV to rival Tesla Model 3, Model Y
Ford plans to launch an affordable battery-electric vehicle priced to compete with Tesla\'s Model 3 and Model Y, CEO Jim Farley said in a podcast interview cited by InsideEV. Farley said Ford is not committing to a single route and will pursue hybrids, extended-range EVs and entry-level EVs. Details of the new model have not been disclosed. Media reports also point to Ford’s universal EV platform and the possible use of LFP batteries.
