U.S. lawyer cited for contempt after including AI-made false testimony in appeal brief
The New Mexico Supreme Court sanctioned a criminal defence lawyer for submitting an appeal brief that included false testimony and witnesses generated by ChatGPT. The court said the issue was not the use of AI itself, but that the lawyer signed and filed the document without verifying the output. It ordered him to pay $5,000 to a state bar client protection fund, referred him for discipline and barred him from appearing before the court pending proceedings.
