UK AI infrastructure shaken as data centre project faces resident backlash
Plans to build one of the world’s largest data centres near a small historic village in Scotland have met strong local opposition, widening tensions over Britain’s push to expand AI infrastructure. Samsung to float AI data centres at sea, eyes commercialisation in 2028
Samsung Heavy Industries is moving to commercialise floating data centres by the second quarter of 2028 and is also seeking to secure orders before installation, industry sources say. The plan comes as land-based data centres face rising burdens from power and water use, local opposition and a shortage of sites, amid growing AI-driven computing demand. The company is considering a barge-style platform carrying servers and power equipment, with future options including LNG-based fuel cells and renewables.

SambaNova seeks over $350 million funding with Intel backing
AI chip startup SambaNova is in talks to raise more than $350 million, with a report saying Intel plans to invest $150 million. Reuters reported the round is led by Vista Equity Partners and Qavam Capital is also expected to participate. The company’s SN40L chip is based on TSMC’s 5-nanometre process. SambaNova offers the SambaStack system and a managed service launched in July.
