South Korea to overhaul R&D system, boost future-tech investment and talent development
South Korea will invest more than 200 trillion won in national research and development over the next five years and overhaul its R&D system, the government said. It set a 2027 government R&D budget plan of 39.5 trillion won, up 11.2 percent from this year, and will put 3.3 trillion won into new R&D projects. It will also focus on three mega projects and foster seven SEED areas while expanding regional autonomous R&D.

IRIS operations to move to KISTI; four R&D support systems to be integrated next year
Operations of the Inter-ministerial Integrated Research Support System, IRIS, will be transferred from the Korea Institute of S&T Planning and Evaluation to the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information, the government said. The science ministry plans from next year to integrate four major research support systems, including IRIS, Ezbaro·RCMS and NTIS, and to introduce AI-based research administration support services. The transfer will proceed in stages through mid-next year.

Korea Aerospace Administration to pursue localisation of five-seat hybrid vertical takeoff and landing aircraft
The Korea Aerospace Administration is moving to develop a domestically produced five-seat hybrid vertical takeoff and landing aircraft that uses both batteries and an engine. It plans to localise key technologies such as generators, avionics and distributed propulsion from 2028 to 2032 and to secure four prototype aircraft by the end of the project. The aircraft targets a range of at least 200 km, payload of at least 600 kg and flight time of at least 60 minutes.
