Ethereum prepares for quantum threat, with security boost and scalability challenge
Ethereum is preparing to transition to post-quantum cryptography with a target of around 2029. It judges the threat is not immediate but cannot be ignored because advanced quantum computers could expose private keys and put billions of dollars at risk. A key issue is performance, as post-quantum schemes can increase signature sizes and verification costs. Ethereum is pursuing structural redesign, including SNARK-based aggregation, and prioritising cryptographic agility.
