LFP batteries overtake nickel-based chemistry as top choice for EVs in 2025
Low-cost lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries emerged as the centre of the global EV battery market in 2025, with demand up 48% and overtaking nickel-based chemistries such as NMC, according to RhoMotion data cited by InsideEVs. Automakers are shifting as costs, environmental burdens and labour and human-rights concerns linked to nickel and cobalt grow. China dominates LFP adoption and its influence is spreading overseas, while North America remains constrained by U.S. tariff and origin rules.
