SMR special act, enforcement decree take effect; public-private commercialisation begins

South Korea has put in place an institutional framework to support small modular reactor (SMR) development from research and development through demonstration and commercialisation at the government-wide level. The Ministry of Science and ICT said the SMR special act and its enforcement decree take effect from Sept. 11. The law sets out support for R&D and demonstration and aims to link outcomes to commercialisation and industry. A public-private committee and planning system will be established, along with support for private-led projects and R&D zones.

Ku Hyuk-chae pledges support for young researchers to pursue tech startup dreams

Ku Hyuk-chae (구혁채), first vice minister at South Korea\'s Ministry of Science and ICT, visited Seoul Bio Hub on Tuesday to review on-site support for young entrepreneurs at the Seoul Hongneung research and development special zone. The visit was part of the ministry\'s Project Empathy 118 programme. Ku toured a tenant startup and held talks with young founders from the GRaND-K Startup School, discussing government support policies and improvements across the startup ecosystem.

Science ministry launches Innopolis L.E.A.D. to train professional managers in Daedeok Innopolis

South Korea\'s Ministry of Science and ICT and the Innopolis Foundation launched the 2026 Innopolis Scale-up Expert L.E.A.D programme at the Daedeok Techbiz Center, the ministry said on Wednesday. The 16-week course aims to train professional managers to support the growth and listing of firms in research and development special zones. A first cohort of 26 executives and experts was selected, with the curriculum run with KAIST.
