MSIT to hold hearing on comprehensive plan to foster R&D special zones
South Korea\'s Ministry of Science and ICT will hold a public hearing on March 19 in Daejeon on its fifth comprehensive plan to foster research and development special zones. The legally mandated plan, based on a special act, sets mid- to long-term policy goals and directions to support growth of the zones. The hearing will include a panel discussion, audience opinions and a question-and-answer session, with live streaming on YouTube.

SMR special act passes National Assembly, master plan to be set every five years
South Korea has established a legal basis to systematically support small modular reactor (SMR) development after a special act passed a National Assembly plenary session on Feb. 12, the Ministry of Science and ICT said. The law mandates a master plan every five years and creates a promotion committee under the Nuclear Energy Promotion Commission. It also allows designation of R&D zones and includes provisions for training specialists and pursuing international cooperation.

Cabinet approves revision to R&D special zones law to strengthen protections in regulatory sandbox
South Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT said on Monday that a bill revising the Special Act on Fostering Research and Development Special Zones was finalised by the cabinet after passage in parliament. The revision clarifies the right to claim compensation for personal harm arising from regulatory-exemption projects and bans the transfer or seizure of compensation deposited in designated accounts. The law will take effect six months after promulgation following presidential approval.
