Blizzard explains why next StarCraft shifts from RTS to open-world shooter

Blizzard has disclosed why the next StarCraft will be developed as an open-world shooter rather than a real-time strategy game. Dan Hay (댄 헤이), general manager for StarCraft, said the genre change emerged naturally from internal discussions as the team kept focusing on characters in the middle of the battlefield. The new title will also emphasise exploration and discovery. Blizzard announced the game at BlizzCon 2026 and is targeting a spring 2030 release.
