Chinese AI firms step up push as Korea sovereign foundation model drive enters new phase
Chinese tech firms are accelerating expansion in the AI market, with Baidu’s Ernie Assistant topping 200 million monthly active users and Kuaishou’s Kling AI reporting 12 million users and more than $20 million in monthly revenue. Alibaba unveiled a major update to its Qwen app. Startups also pressed ahead, including DeepSeek and Moonshot AI. In South Korea, a government-led foundation model project advanced three teams to the next stage and plans an additional selection.

Baidu generative AI assistant tops 200 million monthly active users
Baidu’s generative AI assistant Ernie Assistant has surpassed 200 million monthly active users, the Wall Street Journal reported on Jan. 20, citing people familiar with the matter. Ernie Assistant is integrated into Baidu’s flagship search app and PC version and is also linked with major Chinese lifestyle platforms such as Meituan, JD.com and Trip.com. It supports tasks including booking flights, ordering food delivery and searching health and legal information.

Alibaba updates Qwen app, steps up agentic AI strategy
Alibaba Group said on Jan. 16 it unveiled a major update to its consumer AI application, the Qwen app. The company said the update expands Qwen beyond a simple conversational interface into a system that can autonomously carry out end-to-end tasks. Users can place food orders, make in-chat payments, plan and book travel, call stores and handle multi-step work via voice or text prompts without switching apps or manual steps. The feature will be offered as a public test in China.
