South Korea to launch excellent PhD scholarship programme for science and engineering
South Korea\'s Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Scholarship Foundation said on April 13 they will launch the 2026 excellent PhD scholarship programme for science and engineering this year for the first time. The programme plans to select about 1,000 scholarship recipients, providing 3.75 million won per semester and 7.5 million won per year. About 60 percent of slots will be allocated to non-capital regions. Universities can apply to participate from April 14 to 20.

Science ministry holds talks with future scientists to encourage STEM talent
South Korea\'s Ministry of Science and ICT held the 12th \"Talks with Future Scientists\" at the Cheong Wa Dae state guest house on Feb. 5, encouraging new 2025 Presidential Science Scholarship recipients and international science Olympiad winners. About 270 people attended, including 205 new scholarship recipients and 35 Olympiad awardees. The ministry presented certificates, medals and commemorative plaques to 240 people. A middle school student, Yoon Hye-won, was named the youngest participant.

President Lee reviews expanding alternative service for science and technology talent, revamping military system
President Lee Jae-myung said on Feb. 5 he is reviewing expanding alternative military service for male science and technology talent and overhauling the military system. Speaking at a dialogue event with future scientists, he said the military should shift from an infantry- and headcount-based model to one centered on equipment, weapons and trained experts. He also mentioned research units within the military and said the government is preparing policies to address overseas talent outflows.
