Google announces Universal Commerce Protocol to expand AI agent commerce
Google has announced a new open standard called the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) for AI agent-based commerce, TechCrunch reported. Google unveiled it at a National Retail Federation conference and is working with companies including Shopify, Walmart and Target. UCP is designed to let AI agents operate across shopping, from product search to payment and delivery, and is compatible with other agent protocols. Google plans to enable direct checkout for U.S. retailers via AI Mode Search and the Gemini app.
