Brokerages cut domestic branches and step up global push
South Korean brokerages are accelerating overseas expansion as mobile trading prompts further streamlining of domestic branches. As of end-2025, 16 firms operated 93 overseas outlets, up by 13 from a year earlier, while overseas subsidiaries’ net profit rose 67.8 percent. Domestic branches at the top 10 brokerages slipped to 438 as of March 31. Firms are widening foreign omnibus account services and building networks across the United States, Hong Kong, Southeast Asia and India.

Mirae Asset Securities raised margin requirements for some stocks in South Korea to respond to rising volatility and reduce investment risks from excessive leverage. The broker said sharp swings in the overall market and individual shares have increased customer risk, while leverage ETFs and concentration in large semiconductor names have added volatility. It also cited rising margin debt. Margin rates of 20 percent and 30 percent will be raised to 40 percent.

Mirae Asset Securities denies Bloomberg report on SpaceX IPO subscription error
Mirae Asset Securities denied a Bloomberg report that there was a communication error during the SpaceX IPO subscription process. The company said it followed the lead underwriters’ procedures and carried out the process normally, and it will take legal action over reporting it says is not based on verified sources. Mirae Asset said it submitted $1.14 billion of investor demand through the system provided and received official confirmation. South Korea’s financial watchdog is inspecting the firm.
