Medical, bio AI models prove global competitiveness, move to phase two development
Two AI-focused foundation models being developed in South Korea for medical and bio applications will move into phase two after an interim performance review, the Ministry of Science and ICT said on Monday. A Lunit consortium and a KAIST consortium each scored above 80 points, meeting the 70-point threshold for further support. The ministry plans to keep providing each consortium with 256 Nvidia B200 GPUs through early September. The models are set to be released as open source in early April.

KB Asset Management\'s RISE AI&Robot ETF tops 500 billion won in net assets
KB Asset Management said on Jan. 30 its RISE AI&Robot ETF surpassed 500 billion won in net assets as of Jan. 28. The ETF, launched in 2023, is described as South Korea’s first humanoid robot concept ETF. As of Jan. 30, top holdings include SPG, Neuromeka, Rainbow Robotics, Doosan Robotics and NAVER. The ETF posted 1-month and 6-month returns of 41.47 percent and 93.64 percent.

Govt launches repechage for sovereign AI foundation model project after first review
South Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT said Naver Cloud and NC AI failed the first-stage assessment of the government-led sovereign AI foundation model project. The ministry had planned to eliminate only 1 team and assess 4 in the second stage, but only 3 remain. It will run an additional selection process open to all companies, including those dropped, to fill 1 slot and restore a four-team competition in the first half of this year.
