Lunit, KAIST step up pilot tests and model upgrades ahead of specialised foundation model final review
Lunit and the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), a first-round consortium in South Korea’s specialised AI foundation model programme, are accelerating development ahead of a final evaluation on Sept. 9. The project targets industry-specific AI models trained on sector data. Lunit is expanding proof-of-concept tests to nine hospitals while refining its medical-science model. KAIST is building the bio model K-Fold and plans to scale it and prepare commercial deployment.

South Korea to expand AI foundation models tailored to industries, new tender expected in early July
South Korea will expand a programme to develop AI foundation models tailored to specific industries to bolster sector-by-sector competitiveness. The Ministry of Science and ICT is expected to launch a new tender as early as early July, with the defence industry cited as a priority field. The ministry is also considering expansion to other sectors, but specific areas and timing will depend on budget and policy priorities. The policy is reflected in the sixth Science and Technology Basic Plan for 2026 to 2030.

KAIST declares vision for AI college, steps up push to train global convergence talent
KAIST declared its vision for an artificial intelligence college and said it will accelerate talent development and research innovation. KAIST held a vision declaration event at 10 a.m. on Sunday at its Academic and Cultural Center to share its vision and 추진 direction for training key talent, advancing education and research, cooperating with industry and building a responsible AI ecosystem. The event also included the appointment of an advisory group, with domestic and overseas members.
