Four NST government-funded research institutes still recognise only 1 year of parental leave
Four government-funded research institutes under the National Research Council of Science and Technology have not revised internal rules despite an expansion of statutory parental leave, according to lawmaker Hwang Jung-a. The institutes include KIST, the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources, the Korea Institute of Energy Research and the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute. Some rules still count only 1 year, and KIST retains a clause limiting men’s leave recognition. The institutes said they will amend rules and apply changes retroactively.

Govt-funded research institutes to reorganise around core missions after PBS abolition
South Korea\'s government-funded science and technology research institutes will overhaul their R&D business structures around institution-specific core missions after the abolition of the project-based system (PBS). Incentives such as research allowances will shift from contract scale to differentiated rewards based on performance. The Ministry of Science and ICT said NST approved detailed post-PBS implementation measures, including stronger inter-institute cooperation, evaluation links to budgets and incentives, improved research administration support, and a formal umbrella TLO to back large technology transfers and deep-tech startups.

South Korea launches CCU megaproject with LG Chem, POSCO Holdings
South Korea\'s Ministry of Science and ICT said on Tuesday it held a launch briefing for a \"CCU Megaproject\" to conduct large-scale demonstrations of carbon capture and utilisation technology with private companies including LG Chem and POSCO Holdings. The project will demonstrate producing e-SAF from emissions from thermal power plants and converting steel industry emissions into syngas and cleaner marine fuels. The ministry said 238 billion won in state funds will be invested from 2026 to 2030.
