UK weighs curbing addictive social media features rather than total ban for under-16s
The British government is expected to unveil proposals within weeks to regulate social media use by those under 16, with a focus on limiting addictive design features rather than imposing a blanket ban. Measures being discussed include restrictions on infinite scroll, video autoplay and notifications, as well as limits on likes, comments and recommendation algorithms. Platforms have pushed device-based age controls, while a total ban is not fully ruled out.

UK lawmakers call for ban on crypto political donations amid foreign interference concerns
British Labour lawmakers urged Prime Minister Keir Starmer to prohibit political donations made in cryptocurrencies, citing concerns about foreign interference. In an open letter signed by seven members of parliament, including Liam Byrne, Emily Thornberry and Matt Western, they warned crypto donations undermine political transparency because they are difficult to trace. They asked that a ban be included in the government’s proposed election law amendments and cited a 2022 U.S. State Department information report alleging Russia used crypto to interfere in elections worldwide.
