Waymo after 200 million miles: Camera-only hits limits for Level 4 autonomous driving
Waymo released 10 principles for developing Level 4 autonomous-driving AI, based on more than 200 million miles of fully driverless experience. It said camera-only approaches have limits and highlighted multi-sensor fusion using cameras, lidar and radar, along with HD maps, closed-loop simulation and independent safety validation. The company also described a shift toward a few large specialised foundation models, separate onboard verification, independent evaluation and combining fast control with higher-level reasoning.

Xpeng unveils VLA 2.0, bets on human-like driving feel
Chinese electric vehicle maker Xpeng introduced its VLA 2.0 autonomous driving system, highlighting human-like driving judgments and rapid localisation. It said its in-house Turing AI chip and simulation-based training enable more natural driving than rule-based approaches. Xpeng said the system anticipates road situations and makes context-aware decisions. It also said the new GX offers up to 3,000 TOPS and processes more data inside the vehicle. The company said it can adapt abroad without HD maps or rewriting rules.

Uber to launch robotaxi service in Tokyo this year with Wayve and Nissan
Uber will start a robotaxi service in Tokyo in 2026 with British AI autonomous driving software company Wayve and Japanese automaker Nissan, TechCrunch reported on March 12. Wayve recently completed a $1.2 billion fundraising round and plans to deploy its software in Nissan Leaf vehicles operating on Uber’s platform. Wayve is also preparing a London robotaxi service and plans to apply its technology to vehicles slated for commercialization in 2027.
