Ethereum faces \'death spiral\' warning; report says upgrade hurt economics and Vitalik Buterin is selling
Short-selling firm Culper Research has taken a bearish bet on Ethereum-linked assets, saying the network’s economics deteriorated after the Fusaka upgrade in December 2025. It said an oversupply of block space pushed transaction fees down, lowering staking yields for validators and potentially creating a negative feedback loop that could weaken network security. The report cited analysis data showing co-founder Vitalik Buterin sold about 20,000 ETH this year.

Mantle adopts Ethereum blobs, moves to Ethereum ZK rollup architecture
Mantle Network said on Jan. 23 it has adopted Ethereum blobs as its main data availability layer and will transition to an Ethereum ZK rollup architecture. Mantle said the shift strengthens its high-performance distribution-layer strategy connecting traditional finance, real-world assets and on-chain liquidity, while better aligning with Ethereum’s long-term scaling roadmap. It said the move gathered pace after Ethereum’s Fusaka upgrade, which it views as a turning point for expanding blob throughput capacity by up to eight times in theory.

JPMorgan questions sustainability of Ethereum network activity after Fusaka upgrade
Ethereum network activity increased after the Fusaka upgrade late last year, but JPMorgan raised doubts about whether the gains can be sustained, The Block reported on Jan. 22. Citing a JPMorgan report, The Block said long-standing issues remain and could limit long-term growth. The report flagged migration to layer-2 networks and growth of rival blockchains such as Solana. It also said reduced speculative activity and fee pressures could weigh on prices. JPMorgan was positive on bitcoin, projecting a rise to $170,000 within 6 to 12 months.
