Shinhan Bank secures first FX deal with Green Climate Fund worth $200 million
Shinhan Bank secured the Green Climate Fund\'s first foreign exchange derivatives transaction since the fund was established. The bank said it signed an FX derivatives deal worth about $200 million with the GCF on Aug. 6. The deal expands cooperation between the two from investment to foreign exchange. The GCF began an FX hedging programme using derivatives to reduce volatility in the value of contributions received in multiple currencies.

Won nears 1,490 per dollar this month, fourth-highest on record; biggest drop among major currencies
South Korea’s average won-dollar exchange rate rose to near 1,490 this month, the fourth-highest on a monthly basis, as foreigners sold a record amount of KOSPI shares. The won has posted the biggest decline against the dollar among major currencies this month. Analysts cited risk aversion linked to the Middle East war, valuation concerns in AI and semiconductors, and worries over Korea’s energy import dependence and export mix.

Daily FX trading hits record high in 2025 on surge in overseas securities investment
South Korea’s foreign exchange banks recorded a record daily average foreign exchange trading volume in 2025 as residents’ overseas securities investment and foreigners’ domestic securities investment both surged, the Bank of Korea said. Average daily FX trading, including spot and derivatives, rose 17.0 percent from 2024 to $80.71 billion, the highest since a 2008 statistical revision. Spot trading increased 26.1 percent and derivatives 11.6 percent.
