SpaceX military satellite network Starshield back in focus: how it differs from Starlink

Ukraine has said restrictions on SpaceX’s military satellite service Starshield disrupted military operations, putting the service’s control and operating structure back in focus. Eutelsat shares jump amid controversy over limits on Ukraine military communications

Shares in French satellite company Eutelsat jumped amid controversy over alleged new restrictions on SpaceX’s Starlink service for the Ukrainian military. CNBC reported the stock rose 19 percent on the day and was up 25 percent over the past five days. Ukraine said connectivity weakened and its defence against Russian attacks was constrained. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said Starlink shut off at night, while Elon Musk said responsibility lay with the U.S. government.

Leap second to be abolished from international time standard from May 2027

The leap second will be abolished from the international time standard on May 20, 2027. The Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM) voted to bring forward the deadline from before 2035, the Verge reported. The leap second has been used to correct gaps between atomic time and Earth’s rotation. Concerns have grown that future corrections could require subtracting time, a method never attempted, and could disrupt time-synchronised infrastructure.
