ECB selects 36 companies to test digital euro ahead of 2027 pilot

The European Central Bank has selected 36 payment service providers to take part in tests of the digital euro ahead of a pilot programme due to start in the second half of 2027. ECB warns stablecoin spread could undermine European bank deposit base

The European Central Bank has warned that the spread of stablecoins could eat into European banks’ retail deposits and has put forward a digital euro as a response.
