Alibaba\'s AI and semiconductor bets pay off, from CXMT to Zhipu AI
Alibaba Group Holding is posting large unrealised gains from investments in Chinese memory chipmaker CXMT and generative AI startups, after shifting away from large retail takeovers. It holds about 5 percent of CXMT, valued at more than 140 billion yuan, after investing about 7.6 billion yuan since 2021. Alibaba has also backed Zhipu AI and other Chinese AI startups, while continuing investments in semiconductors, data centres and robotics.

Science ministry and SMEs ministry hold briefing for startups to avoid confusion over AI Basic Law
South Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT held an “AI Startup Growth Strategy Briefing” with the Ministry of SMEs and Startups on Jan. 28 in Seoul to share key provisions of the AI Basic Law with AI startups. The ministries also explained related legislation and support programmes, including AI Challenge and Deep Tech Challenge Project. Officials said they would operate the law to avoid hindering innovation and strengthen communication with startups.

QAI to build commercial quantum-AI hybrid data center
Quantum AI specialist QAI said on Thursday it signed a contract with SDT to build a hybrid quantum computing system and purchased a 20-qubit superconducting quantum computer. QAI will work with DCP to install the system at an AI data center in Cheongdam-dong, Gangnam, Seoul, and begin full-scale commercial hybrid quantum computing services from the first quarter of 2026. QAI also outlined plans for a four-way hybrid model combining CPU, GPU, NPU and QPU.
