AI music copyright standards gap adds to industry confusion
AI-generated music is spreading quickly, but South Korea still lacks clear standards for recognising copyrights. The Korea Music Copyright Association drew up its own rules for registering and managing AI-assisted music, then withdrew them about three weeks after implementation. Industry uncertainty over copyright registration and the distribution and settlement of royalties is expected to continue. The association has decided to put new registrations on hold until a new management system is prepared.

Government publishes fair use guide for generative AI training on copyrighted works
The government published a guide laying out standards related to generative AI training on copyrighted works and will pursue institutional improvements aimed at coexistence between the AI and cultural industries. The Ministry of Science and ICT and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism said the guide explains four factors for judging fair use under copyright law. It also outlines strengthened policy support for handling copyright issues arising in the use of AI training data.

The guide explains four assessment factors, and says commercial purposes or web-crawling methods are not automatically excluded and must be judged comprehensively. The government also plans to bolster policy support, expand public works available for AI training and set up an AI-focused consultation, consulting and dispute-mediation channel.
