Toyota bet on hybrids, says first EV lacked competitiveness
Toyota is sticking with a hybrid-led electrification strategy in the United States while expanding its EV lineup, a company executive said. Senior Vice President Cooper Ericksen (Cooper Ericksen) described the EV market response as a roller-coaster and said strategy begins with judging demand. He argued incentives drove many EV sales and said Toyota’s first mass-market EV, the bZ4X, lacked competitiveness. Toyota is maintaining a “multi-pathway” approach covering hybrids, EVs and hydrogen.
