EU delays high-risk AI rules to end-2027, complicating digital sovereignty strategy
The European Union has decided to delay enforcement of rules for high-risk artificial intelligence systems until the end of 2027, a move seen as a step back for Europe’s digital sovereignty strategy. The adjustment aims to ease competitive burdens on AI companies, though critics warn it could expand U.S. big tech influence. The EU also widened exemptions for some industries while tightening measures on sexually explicit AI images and requiring visible labels on AI-made content from December.

EU considers limiting use of U.S. cloud for sensitive public sector data processing
The European Union is considering restricting member-state governments from using U.S. cloud services when processing sensitive data, CNBC reported. Two European Commission officials said internal discussions are under way on limiting exposure of sensitive public-sector data to cloud platforms outside the EU. The Commission is set to unveil a Tech Sovereignty Package on May 27. The proposal would limit use based on data sensitivity, not impose a blanket ban, and would not cover private companies.

Europe steps up battle to cut reliance on US big tech as cloud law, political tensions intensify
European governments are expanding efforts to reduce reliance on U.S. software and cloud services and shift to European “sovereign technology.” The trend is linked to concerns over the 2018 U.S. CLOUD Act, which can require U.S. firms to provide access to data stored abroad. France is moving health data off Microsoft Azure to a sovereign cloud provider, and the European Commission has awarded sovereign cloud contracts to several European firms.
