One year after Trump warns of semiconductor tariffs, what has changed
Nearly a year after U.S. President Donald Trump warned of 100 percent tariffs on semiconductors, advanced memory such as high-bandwidth memory (HBM) has avoided the levies, but Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix face investment demands running into the hundreds of trillions of won. The United States has begun a first-phase tariff on advanced computing chips while excluding memory. Focus is now on possible second-phase measures, including legacy memory tariffs and conditions tied to investment.
