China removes 14,000 AI products in sweeping cleanup amid race for AI dominance

China has begun a broad overhaul of artificial intelligence services, removing about 14,000 products from domestic networks for failing safety standards and regulatory requirements. Regulators also deleted more than 6 million items of illegal or harmful information and suspended over 26,000 accounts. Authorities are tightening pre-registration and safety obligations for AI services and preparing a second enforcement phase targeting misinformation, impersonation and other abuses. New rules on AI companion services take effect from July 15.
