Ethereum demand shifts from speculative trading to on-chain activity as staking surges
Ethereum demand is shifting from speculative exchange trading to on-chain activity such as staking and decentralised finance, as exchange-held balances keep declining. Whale withdrawals and staking are increasing and the DeFi lending market is showing signs of recovery. U.S. demand has weakened, with the Coinbase Premium Index mostly negative in 2026 and ether open interest at $11.37 billion. Network activity has risen, with smart contract deployments increasing in the second quarter and more than 500,000 contracts deployed in late July.

Ethereum validator exit queue returns to zero
Ethereum’s validator exit queue has returned to zero this year, indicating that moves to withdraw staked funds have effectively stopped. On-chain data firm ValidatorQueue said the exit queue stayed empty for three straight days from July 18 to 20. In contrast, demand from new validators continues to rise, with about 2.5 million ether waiting to join and an estimated wait of up to 43 days and 10 hours.

Ethereum Foundation sees continued staff departures; 5 senior members leave in May
Two more key researchers have resigned from the Ethereum Foundation, lifting confirmed major departures this year to at least eight. Cointelegraph reported that Julian Ma and Carl Beek left after 4 and 7 years, respectively. Their exits bring to 5 the number of senior developers and researchers who have left in May alone. The departures follow earlier resignations and a leadership shake-up signalled by Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin.
