IT device shrinkflation intensifies as prices rise and capacity halves
Shrinkflation, where prices rise while specifications fall, is spreading across global IT devices including smartphones, laptops, consoles and desktops. The shift by SK Hynix, Samsung Electronics and Micron toward high-bandwidth memory for AI data centres is reducing supply of standard DRAM and NAND, supporting higher RAM prices. Set makers are passing margin pressure to consumers through price hikes and specification cuts, a trend the industry expects to persist until mass production of DDR6 ramps up.

AI demand squeezes PC components market, motherboard sales set for record slump
The PC motherboard market is expected to contract sharply this year as rising AI demand concentrates semiconductor supply on the enterprise market, an analysis showed. Higher prices for memory, CPUs and storage are slowing consumer upgrades and new PC purchases. Major manufacturers have cut sales targets, with the top four vendors forecast to see motherboard sales fall about 28% from a year earlier. Some assessments say the downturn is structural rather than seasonal.

AI-driven component supply crunch to hit Big Four motherboard makers\' 2026 sales
A deepening shortage of key PC components is driving a sharp drop in motherboard sales as demand for AI hardware surges, Tom\'s Hardware reported on Wednesday. The outlet said Nvidia, Intel and AMD are cutting production of consumer chips to boost AI processor output, lifting prices for parts such as memory modules and storage drives over the past six months. It said the four major motherboard makers have lowered their internal 2026 sales goals.
