Mark Cuban proposes federal AI token tax, says it could boost efficiency and revenue
U.S. billionaire investor Mark Cuban proposed a federal-level “AI token tax” on AI service operators. He suggested charging less than 50 cents per 1 million tokens at the commercial AI provider level, with revenue rising as usage increases. Cuban said the tax should apply only to commercial providers and exclude open-source models and local inference on personal devices. MS GitHub Copilot ditches monthly flat fee, adopts AI credits with usage-based charges
GitHub will shift the pricing of its AI coding tool GitHub Copilot to a usage-based system from June, replacing a monthly flat-fee structure. From June 1, all Copilot plans will use GitHub AI Credits, which are deducted when AI features are used and trigger additional charges once exhausted. Core code completion and Next Edit Suggestions will remain included and will not consume credits. Monthly subscription prices will stay unchanged.
