Bae Gyeong-hun says Korea\'s homegrown AI foundation model project will continue, frontier AI push too
Bae Gyeong-hun (배경훈), deputy prime minister and science minister, said South Korea will continue its homegrown AI foundation model project known as Dokpamo and also take on frontier AI at the national level. He said domestic AI capabilities have grown more than expected but warned that Chinese open-weight models are still widely used and spreading across industries. Bae said support will shift to expand opportunities for startups and small firms, while Dokpamo’s third round will finish as planned.

Dokpamo four-team AI models listed on U.S. Epoch AI \'Notable Model\'
AI models developed by four elite teams in the government\'s \"independent AI foundation model\" project have all been listed in a global AI competitiveness evaluation metric. The Ministry of Science and ICT said the models were included in the \"Notable Model\" list compiled by U.S. nonprofit AI research group Epoch AI. The metric is used in Stanford University\'s AI Index. The ministry said only the United States, China and South Korea have produced such models so far this year.

Stanford AI Index to correct South Korea\'s notable model count to 8
South Korea’s tally of notable AI models released in 2025 in Stanford University’s AI Index 2026 report will be corrected to 8 from 5, the Ministry of Science and ICT said on Wednesday. The ministry said Stanford’s Human-Centered AI Institute omitted some models and would make the correction after the ministry requested additional verification. The revised list includes models from Upstage, LG AI Research, NC AI, SK Telecom and Naver Cloud.
