Mobile phone activation facial authentication rollout delayed, alternative options under review

South Korea has delayed the full rollout of a policy requiring facial authentication when activating mobile phones, reflecting concerns over personal data leaks and other issues. The Ministry of Science and ICT said on March 20 it will extend the pilot period for verifying identity using facial recognition to June 30. The procedure was introduced in December as part of anti-voice phishing measures, but drew recommendations from the National Human Rights Commission and requests for alternatives.

A BTS concert in Seoul's Gwanghwamun on March 21 will be broadcast live worldwide on Netflix to more than 300 million subscribers, drawing attention for its technology. Unlike video-on-demand, live streaming must capture and encode video in real time and deliver it simultaneously to hundreds of millions of devices. Netflix uses an AWS-based live infrastructure with dual-region redundancy, real-time encoding and distribution via its Open Connect CDN. The stream will process up to 38 million system events per second.

Korea gamers' association criticises Roblox for not disclosing odds information, calls for system reform

The Korea Gamers Association on Thursday urged government authorities to act and to improve ratings classification rules over allegations that metaverse platform Roblox conceals probability-based item information and distributes content that could distort history. The association said Roblox operates millions of user-generated content games while being rated as a single game, effectively sidestepping disclosure obligations. It also raised concerns about a lack of qualitative controls and called for clearer classification standards across metaverse platforms.
