Coinbase-led Ethereum layer-2 Base's creator coin strategy is stirring controversy within the developer community.
CoinDesk recently reported that Base has been pushing to expand its on-chain ecosystem by focusing on creator token issuance combined with NFT marketplace Zora. As a result, Zora-based creator coin issuance in August last year at one point pushed Base's daily token minting volume above Solana's, helping lift overall on-chain activity.
Despite those results, some developers of Base-native projects criticised what they described as an excessive focus of official marketing and social media resources on the Zora-related narrative. They said resource allocation centered on Zora was sidelining other projects. Complaints are also growing that incentives to keep building on the Base platform are weakening as projects with existing user bases and long-standing contributions receive relatively little attention.
A developer who asked not to be identified said, "I have contributed to the Base ecosystem for a long time, but our story is hardly covered on official channels." The developer added, "If resource distribution is skewed toward only certain projects, it could hinder long-term ecosystem diversity and innovation."
