Nvidia released quarterly results that beat expectations.

On Aug. 26, the Wall Street Journal reported that Nvidia posted revenue of $96.2 billion for its latest quarter ended in July. That was about 4 percent above the $92.3 billion forecast by analysts polled by FactSet. Net profit was $59.7 billion and earnings per share were $2.46, with both measures far exceeding market expectations.

Data centre revenue, including AI servers, was $89.0 billion, topping analysts' estimate of $86.3 billion.

Even so, Nvidia shares fell about 1 percent in after-hours trading after the earnings release. The WSJ said the move reflected market unease about the sustainability of the AI trade and excess investment in AI infrastructure.

Nvidia said in early August it would work with major Wall Street investment banks to guarantee data centre financing of up to $500 billion. It also decided to support a large data centre project in Ohio being pursued by OpenAI. The terms could leave it facing losses of billions of dollars if leasing plans fall through.

News of server price surges tied to a shortage of memory chip supply, and news that it would invest $6 billion to develop AI models to check China, have also drawn investors' attention recently. The WSJ reported that Nvidia shares fell for seven straight sessions amid such concerns and only stopped sliding on Tuesday.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang (젠슨 황) said, "AI has now reached an inflection point." He said, "AI tokens are actually performing productive and profitable work. Until last year a single lab led the AI boom, but now we are in a golden age where multiple frontier labs and startups are growing at the same time."

Even so, investors are now paying more attention to forward guidance than surprise results. Key points to watch around Nvidia include its new-product launch schedule, the pace and cost of building AI infrastructure, whether it resumes sales to China, rising memory chip costs, and intensifying competition as major customers such as OpenAI and Anthropic develop their own chips.
