LG CNS said on Tuesday it will work with Naver Cloud to apply direct-to-chip cooling (DTC), a liquid-cooling technology, at the Samsong data centre and lay the groundwork to support high-performance AI services.

LG CNS earlier took charge of outsourced operations at the Samsong data centre and signed a colocation contract for the site with Naver Cloud.

The liquid-cooling infrastructure will be built so Naver Cloud can operate Nvidia’s next-generation GPU, Vera Rubin, owned by the National IT Industry Promotion Agency under the Ministry of Science and ICT. Vera Rubin is expected to improve inference performance by about 3.3 times compared with the existing Blackwell Ultra.

According to LG CNS, the DTC system to be applied at the Samsong data centre is a liquid-cooling method that attaches a cooling plate carrying coolant to the GPU chip to absorb heat. It uses liquid, which has higher heat-transfer efficiency than air, to efficiently control heat generated by high-density GPU servers.

In general, the limit of cooling capacity that existing air-cooling can handle is about 20 to 30 kW per rack, but power density in high-performance GPU server racks is rising to more than 200 kW. As a result, liquid cooling such as DTC is drawing attention as an important technology for building AI factories.

LG CNS will combine its data centre design, build and operate (DBO) capabilities with AI infrastructure technology to deliver an integrated implementation spanning DTC liquid cooling, GPU server operating environments, power supply systems and the operational foundation for AI platforms. Naver Cloud plans to provide high-performance AI services to domestic public institutions and companies based on its AI platform operations capabilities and experience with large-scale GPU services. The companies plan to complete construction and verification of the liquid-cooling infrastructure by next year.

Jo Heon-hyeok (조헌혁), an executive director in charge of LG CNS’s data centre business, said data centre cooling technology is becoming a core competitive edge for AI service quality and operational efficiency. He said LG CNS will work with Naver Cloud to continue building key infrastructure that supports the growth of the domestic AI ecosystem, based on LG CNS’s strengths in data centre DBO capabilities and next-generation cooling technology.
