Perplexity unveiled “Portable Computer,” a local version of its AI agent platform “Computer,” VentureBeat reported on Aug. 25 local time.

Portable Computer runs on Linux devices equipped with Nvidia DGX Spark and RTX GPUs.

Perplexity developed Portable Computer in close cooperation with Nvidia, the report said. Models, user files and work results are all kept on the device. Tasks processed locally do not consume billing credits. All tasks start on the device by default, and it first seeks user approval when handing them off to more powerful cloud frontier models.

Nate, vice president of infrastructure and enterprise engineering at Perplexity, said, “We brought the same UI over exactly as a fully local app.” He said it includes everything needed for local work, including the agent harness and inference.

Nader, director of Nvidia developer technology, said, “Local AI has passed an inflection point.” He said it used to be at the level of enthusiasts running heavily quantized tiny models, but the situation has changed with the emergence of practical open-source models.

Portable Computer supports Qwen 3.8 27B and PPLX 27B models based on Nvidia DOCA software. Support for Nvidia Nemotron 3.5 Lightning will also be added soon.

In its own benchmark, “Local Knowledge Work Bench,” the Qwen 27B-based Computer scored 82.6 percent. That was ahead of the open-source Harness Pi at 77.6 percent and Hermes at 74.0 percent.

Portable Computer will be offered first in Linux environments to Pro, Max, Enterprise Pro and Enterprise Max subscribers, with Windows support to be added in September. Minimum requirements are an RTX GPU with at least 24GB of VRAM.
