Tesla will hold an unveiling event in Austin, Texas, on Sept. 3 for its two-seat, driverless taxi-only vehicle, the Cybercab.
Electrek reported on Aug. 24 that Tesla is promoting the event with a poster bearing the phrase "Exclusive Access: Cybercab". The event will invite only top entrants in a robotaxi ride event. A livestream will also be provided for other users.
Invitees include users with a high number of robotaxi rides and winners from a mail-in entry. Winners will be announced on Aug. 26, and attendees must be 21 or older. The RSVP deadline is Aug. 30. Tesla introduced the event as "an opportunity to experience the future of autonomous driving."
Despite the event wording, the actual content is limited. The Cybercab is closer to adding a two-seat vehicle without a steering wheel to Tesla's existing driverless robotaxi service that has operated in Austin for more than a year. The Cybercab can be hailed through the existing robotaxi app. It will be deployed alongside the Model Y currently in service or replace existing vehicles.
The vehicle changes, but the autonomous driving system that powers it is the same. The Cybercab will carry the same Full Self-Driving (FSD) software stack used in the Model Y robotaxis currently in operation. That software is the same system used in a vehicle that struck multiple bollards in Austin last week with no one in the driver's seat.
Tesla started its robotaxi service in Austin in June 2025. A year later, its operating scale remains small. Based on its own reporting and independent community tracking, the number of Tesla's unsupervised vehicles actually operating at a given point in time is about 20 to 30. That figure peaked at about 25 last spring and has since stagnated or even declined. Tesla said in its July earnings release that cumulative unsupervised driving distance was about 380,000 miles, or about 612,000 km. It also explained that while Tesla deployed far more vehicles, only some are actually operating at a given time.
The scale gap with competitors is large. Waymo operates about 3,000 driverless vehicles and completes more than 500,000 paid rides each week. Its cumulative rider-only driving distance exceeds 220 million miles, or about 354 million km. Tesla's cumulative unsupervised driving distance is less than 0.2 percent of Waymo's, and Tesla's operating fleet is smaller than a single Waymo depot. Adding the Cybercab to the existing fleet is assessed as not changing that gap. It would only add one new model to the same small, unproven service.
The Cybercab's advantages over the Model Y are mainly in efficiency. The Cybercab was designed from the outset as a two-seater, and Tesla presented its energy use at about 165 watt-hours per mile, or about 103 Wh per km. That is the most efficient figure among Tesla-made electric vehicles. With a 48 kWh battery and a weight of 3,113 pounds, it is lighter and has lower aerodynamic drag than the Model Y, which is about 250 to 280 watt-hours per mile, or about 155 to 174 Wh per km. For a company operating its own fleet, lowering energy cost per mile is a practical advantage.
But that efficiency only matters when there are 2 passengers or fewer. The Model Y can carry up to 5 people, but the Cybercab is a two-seat vehicle without a steering wheel or pedals and with minimal cargo space. If there are more than 2 companions, or if luggage, a stroller or a wheelchair is needed, it is difficult to view it as an upgrade. It is described as closer to a smaller vehicle traveling the same routes previously served by the Model Y.
Ultimately, this change is assessed as a trade-off that reduces space in exchange for saving a few cents in energy cost per mile on short-distance travel, while still relying on an autonomous driving system not yet proven at scale.
The "Exclusive Access" written on the poster is also criticized as amounting to little more than access to a differently shaped Tesla vehicle within the same service, using the same software and operating in the same geographic area, with scale unchanged for more than a year. The figure of 165 watt-hours per mile is assessed as a meaningful achievement in efficiency, but analysis says the program's key bottleneck is not per-mile efficiency but the maturity of autonomous driving. The Cybercab does not solve that problem.
The key is ultimately the number of vehicles. If unsupervised vehicles remain at about 20 to 30 even a month after the Sept. 3 event ends, it will be difficult to avoid assessments that the event was promotional to make a stalled program look like it is moving. The vehicle is new, but issues that have continued since June 2025 remain, according to that critique. It says there are not enough vehicles on the road and there is also not enough evidence that those vehicles have finished preparing for actual service deployment.
