New book shows how to build literacy in the AI era

Publisher Midas Books said on Feb. 26 it has released a practical guide, "AI Era, This Is How You Build Literacy," on strengthening literacy using artificial intelligence.

The book focuses on an "active learning structure" that lets children take charge of literacy in the AI era. The authors warn against mental laziness created by automatic summaries and easy information, and propose ways to use AI as a tool for questions and verification. The publisher said the book offers an aesthetic educational experience that helps children judge and express on their own rather than rely on AI, detailing the process from designing questions before reading to building a story through customised prompts and activity sheets that can be used immediately in the field.

The five-chapter book starts by examining changes in the essence of reading in the AI era, and moves on to an in-depth reading process that stimulates children's curiosity and builds background knowledge. The publisher stressed that the "immersion prompts" and "emotion-expression training" proposed by the authors help ease the sense of being at a loss children feel in front of a blank sheet of paper and can awaken creativity.

Co-authors Ki-bbeum Na (나기쁨) and Je-eun Lee (이제은) are literacy specialist education planners who run the education platform "Qurate" and the "Reading Literacy Research Institute," respectively.

Midas Books' editorial department said, "The essence of education is not how you use AI, but what you use it for." It said the book's systematic AI-use strategies guide children to achieve results by asking questions and exploring on their own, and further leads them on a path to attaining completion of literacy.
